Incurable (2011)

Ever wonder what it would be like to be a zombie? How the transformation and evolution would feel; physically and mentally? What would it be like to experience the ravenous, mind-numbing hunger for human flesh? I have often wondered but have never been able to truly manifest the experience in my head. Well, that all changed when I read the tremendously unsettling yet strangely compassionate and liberating short tale, INCURABLE, by Brandy de Cusack.

It is written in the first person and masterfully delivers the appalling account of a battered woman falling victim to a sickness brought on by an STD given to her by her dead-beat husband that hurls her into a tragic rebirth of sorts. The story assaults you right from the first sentence. It yanks you into the world of Jesse as she liberates herself from the shackles of infidelity and abuse and falls headlong into a wicked transformation brought on by a rapidly spreading virus. She narrates her tortured journey in extreme detail; capturing every thought, experience and physiological/psychological change.

author Brandy de Cusack (the female in red).

This was a truly enjoyable read. The concept of becoming a zombie but with mind intact is truly original. You will not find a brain-dead lump of flesh zombie in this story. Rather, you find a surprisingly human and rational character who is moving on to a better “life” (yep, that´s called irony). From the first paragraph you are invested in the Jesse. You empathize and agree with her course of actions based on her experiences with her abusive husband. You applaud her courage and independence as the rebirth begins. I was immersed in this story. Pages turned quickly as Jesse tread her path of transformation. Before I knew it, it was over. No nonsense. No filler. Just eloquent and direct passages that guide the reader through a gory yet satisfying web of justice, murder and rebirth.

A stellar piece of writing. Imaginative and striking. Wicked and justified.
